"Events" Pages - 2003 Watermelon Festival - Spring 2004 - 2005 SD State Fair

We went to California, intending to primarily work on the web site.  Anyone who knows me though, probably could have predicted that I'd be bored with that soon.  We decided to try setting up at festivals, using a 10'x10' tent, as most vendors use.  I built some redwood display cases and a revolving necklace display stand.  We didn't know what to expect, but were pleasantly surprised.  Unlike most things in life, it went just about as planned, perhaps even a little better.

Our first California event was "Snyder's Rock/Gem Show and Pow Wow" in Valley Springs.  Other vendors had some fossil shark teeth, but we had BY-FAR the best shark tooth display.  Our best sellers were the inexpensive shark tooth necklaces.  We have it set-up for the customer to choose the shark tooth pendant they want, for from $7 to $20.  Then we attach it to their choice of the 30+ style necklaces that we have available, for no additional charge. Our second event was the "Calaveras County Fair and Frog-Jump Jubilee" in Angel's Camp.  We made hundreds more pendants before (and during) this event and it's a good thing we did.  Several fair-goers said we had the best display at the fair and parents were willing (even anxious) to bring their children to see the display and buy a souvenir.  I'd love to have our 4-foot Isurus jaw replica with us, but it's in storage back in Florida (didn't plan to be doing this).

Our plan for the future is to set-up two 10'x10' tents and sell shark-related items from one and seashell-related items from the other (something my wife is more interested in).  Our goal is to bring a mini museum and unique gift shop to people who might not otherwise have a chance to see and purchase these type of items.  Perhaps we'll even inspire some young paleontologists along the way.
