| The probable reason this shark is called "Pigmy Great White", is that it's teeth resemble those from the modern Great White (with the addition of side cusps). The two are not directly related though. They are very distant cousins. This ancient shark lived in the late Paleocene (about 50 MYA). Thus, it's scientific name - paleo (for the age it lived) and carcharodon (for Great White). It is believed to have gone extinct, leaving no descendants. NOTE - The name of this shark is sometimes spelled Palaeocarcharodon (with an extra "a"). I'm not actually sure which spelling is correct, but Paleo... is the same as the age it live, so I'm guessing that is the correct spelling. |
