Why do sharks generate so much emotion? Many
people have an unusual fear of sharks, especially since the popular film JAWS.
That film though, did not accurately depict normal shark behavior. It continued shark myths that have existed since man first stepped foot
into the ocean, and started some new ones. So please realize that much of your fear is based on misinformation. Do you
remember the old adage, "We fear what we do not understand"? It
certainly applies in this situation. We hope that the information at this
web site will help gradually transform your fear into awe and respect. |

How have sharks dominated the oceans for so long? How have sharks survived the extinction events that have befallen so many other animals - not just survive, but dominate? Two reasons - a wonderful basic design and the ability to adapt to changing environments. First, let's consider the design. If you were asked to create the best possible predator, how would you do it? Let's start by making it fast, strong and maneuverable. Now let's give it special senses to detect it's prey - and how about some big sharp teeth. If you were also instructed to make it function in the water, I'll bet your final designed would look an awful lot like...a shark. Relative
to their adaptation
ability, there is hardly a place in the ocean where you won't find sharks
surviving, even thriving. When you start with such a good design, only
minor modifications
are needed to exploit varying environments. |

If a shark could talk, what would it say?
