Our Florida home-base is near Arcadia.  When there, we live only a few hundred feet from the Peace River at a family-oriented campground called Peace River Campground.  Next door is a canoe rental company called Canoe Outpost (at their web site, find the Peace River link - #5 on the map).  The picture to the right shows a deck at the river's edge, with a set of stairs going up to the campground.  When the water is higher, you will often see people fishing from the deck.  The deck is just one of several places throughout the campground to access the river.

During the rainy season, the water rises significantly, sometimes flowing above the deck.  The highest we've seen it was in the fall of 2001, when it was well above the deck railings and flowing throughout the campground (thanks to tropical storm Gabrielle).  You can imagine the amazing hydraulic forces that cut out the bank and deposit fossils in the middle of the river.  Come visit us and we'll show you where in the river to look for them.
   

Pictured left, are my wife and I at one of our favorite spots.  We often take people to this area of the river and we ALWAYS find great stuff.  It doesn't take a guide though, to have a great time and find interesting fossils.  Stop by our museum/store and we'll point you toward the river, with the right equipment and some words of advice.
